There is a scam that started circulating last year and if you are selling something online, you should be aware of it. It’s called the Google Voice scam. WGAL sister station received an email from a viewer: “Today we posted a grid to sell on Facebook Marketplace and a person contacted my wife and asked if she could come see her and we said yes. She wanted our address and phone number. .She said she was sending a text with a verification code and sent it in an email. The person never responded. Do you know what we can expect? ” Here’s the scam: If you give the verification code, they’ll try to use it to create a Google Voice number linked to your phone number. Google Voice would create a different phone number that scammers could use to make calls or send text messages from a web browser or mobile device to get people started. You wouldn’t know any of that, but the scam number could be located up to you. The viewer in this case responded with the code.
