Google, IBM underreporting greenhouse gas emissions, study says

Stephen Shankland / CNET

Google and IBM are one of 56 top technology companies that do not disclose all of their greenhouse gas emissions. Newly published research.. “A case study in the technology sector found that corporate reports omitted half of total emissions,” found an average of 56 companies.

Researchers at the Technische Universität München analyzed the type of emissions known as Scope 3, according to a study published late last week in the journal Nature Communications. For example, Google’s parent company Alphabet consistently reported emissions, but found that those reports could not include specific emissions. It turns out that IBM publishes inconsistent reports on carbon dioxide emissions, except that it excludes certain types of emissions and reports different emissions to different audiences. ..

Neither Google nor IBM responded immediately to CNET’s request for comment.
