Christine Smart’s verdict reached

SALINAS, Calif. (KRON) — A jury verdict was delivered in the Christine Smart murder trial on Tuesday, according to a Monterey County Superior Court spokesperson.

Two verdicts by two jurors will be read in court at 1:30 p.m., revealing the fate of defendants Paul Flores and Ruben Flores.

Smart was a 19-year-old freshman on May 25, 1996, when he disappeared from the California Institute of Technology campus in San Luis Obispo. According to prosecutors, fellow Caltech student Paul Flores murdered Smart when he tried to rape him in his dorm room.

His father, Ruben Flores, is accused of helping cover up the murder, allegedly burying Smart’s body in the backyard of his home in Arroyo Grande, California.

Smart’s body has never been found. It took law enforcement and prosecutors 25 years to find enough evidence to charge Paul Flores with Smart’s murder. It may finally give you the justice you deserved.

The trial was held in Monterey County because a judge decided it would be too difficult to find an impartial juror in San Luis Obispo County. Her 1996 disappearance of Smart started a countywide search operation.

“The whole community banded together and desperately searched for Christine, but Paul and Ruben didn’t. Tear up a poster of the missing Christine showing her beautiful face and calling her a “dirty woman”.
