“Apart from being the most iconic voice in the comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend and father of his two young children. Although today is a sad day for all of us, keep laughing as hard as you can at “Gilbert’s honor,” the message said.

Gottfried began his stint as a teenager in New York City, then joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 1980. He became famous in part by making a variety of improvised promos for the then-fledged MTV network and eventually building a film career.

He is perhaps best known for his vocal role as Iago in Disney’s “Aladdin” and has recorded numerous commercials, cartoons and animated films. He was also a regular guest on talk shows during the day and late at night.

No further information was immediately available on Gottfried’s death.

This is breaking news. Check again for updates.
