Archaeologists recently uncovered a series of mysterious “ghost footprints” in the salt flats of a Utah desert. These unusual ancient footprints have their eerie name not because they hail from an ethereal realm, but because of their earthly composition: they only become visible after it has rained and the footprints fill with moisture and darken before drying again disappear in that Sun.

Researchers accidentally discovered the unusual impressions in early July while driving to another nearby archaeological Located at Hill Air Force Base in Utah’s Great Salt Lake Desert. The team initially only found a handful of footprints, but a thorough ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey of the area revealed at least 88 individual footprints belonging to a range of adults and children, who may have been as young as 5 years old. (GPR technology works by firing radio waves into the ground, which bounce off objects hidden beneath the surface.)
