German gymnastics team, tired of ‘sexualization,’ wears unitards

Tokyo (AP) — The German women’s gymnastics team competed in the first tournament at the Tokyo Olympics, wearing unitards in leggings that stretched to the ankles.

It went against the habit of sports high-top bikini bottoms.

Gymnasts say that the choice of wardrobe is aimed at promoting “opposition to sexualization” in women’s gymnastics.

The Tokyo Olympics are the first Summer Olympics since Larry Nassar, a former US gymnast doctor, was sent to jail for 176 years for sexually abusing hundreds of gymnasts.

Male gymnasts wear relatively covert clothing with loose shorts for floor exercises and vaults, and long trousers for bar and pommel horse routines.
