Future Acres launches with the arrival of crop-transporting robot, Carry – TechCrunch

When people ask me which robotics category is ready for maximum growth, I often point out agriculture. While this technology has already built a strong foothold in places such as warehouses and logistics, it is impossible to see the American and global agricultural communities, and there is little potential for human automation.

This category still seems to be fairly widespread, but not because I’m not interested. Both large and small companies are opening up niches in this category. For now, at least there seems to be room for many different players. After all, needs vary widely from farm to farm and from crop to crop.

The Santa Monica-based Future Acres is launched today with plans to tackle grape hunting. A by-product of Wavemaker Partners, the same company that provided the world with hamburger Miso Robotics, the startup also announced its first robot, Carry.

“Carry considers it a kind of harvesting companion for workers. It’s an autonomous harvesting companion,” CEO Suma Reddy told TechCrunch. “What you can do in the real world is transport up to £ 500. For crops of all terrain and all weather. You can increase production efficiency by up to 80%, which means you can pay for it in just 80 days. “

Carrie uses AI to transport selected crops and work with humans rather than completely replacing the delicate harvesting process. The company hopes to buy multiple machines that work together on the farm to speed up the process and reduce the human burden of manually moving crops.

The company, which developed the carry prototype, is still in its infancy. We are also looking for some partnerships for development. The system runs $ 10,000 to $ 15,000 in advance, but the company says it is considering a RaaS (robot engineering as a service) model as a way to defer that cost.

Interest in agricultural robotics increased only during the pandemic amid health concerns and labor issues. The company is raising interest by launching a campaign at SeedInvest in the hope of raising $ 3 million in addition to the funding already provided by Wavemaker.
