Due to the relatively small number of vaccine reservations, state and federal authorities call anyone eligible to sign up for “immediate reservation” to be vaccinated with COVID-19 at the site of the giant California State University. I’m calling.
The call was made a few days before the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the California Emergency Services Department stopped managing the site, and will move to Los Angeles next week.
“We have a modest schedule for the next few days. CalOES spokesman Greg Renick said in the state. MyTurn website.
These doses are Johnson & Johnson vaccines and require only one shot, as opposed to the two shot doses of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines.
To date, the East LA Site and related mobile vaccination clinics have given more than 313,000 doses. By the time the federal / state partnership ends on the site on Sunday and ends on the mobile clinic on Saturday, according to Renik, it’s enough to reach the goal of 350,000 doses.
But achieving that goal is to make “a big step forward in the next few days,” especially in the light of the president. Joe Biden’s deadline extended until April 19th...
It was unclear why there were too many reservations, especially as local public health officials expected the most intense demand to date as eligibility expanded.
However, in contrast to sites operated by local counties and their associated vaccine networks, the California State University site (and Oakland’s sister site) obtained vaccine batches directly from the federal government. The county’s PODS and network get quotas from the state, and states get quotas from the federal government. Vaccines following that supply line were sporadic and difficult to plan.
Private health insurance, such as Kaiser Permanente, is also strengthening its capabilities, eligibility, and distribution.
Still, many residents who sign up through the state’s MyTurn portal still support full scheduled or booked times weeks ahead.
Behind the scenes, FEMA and state authorities are using sectors that may be eager for vaccination to disseminate information, but only if they meet eligibility criteria.
The California State University location opened in February as an eight-week pilot project. It demonstrated a collaborative effort between the state and the federal government to target low-income areas that were hit hard by the pandemic. A team of more than 200 soldiers from Fort Carson, Colorado, has been deployed to Southern California to assist in the establishment and staffing of the complex.
Over 68% of doses are given to people in poorly serviced and at-risk communities. Over 650,000 doses were distributed in California between the two sites.
The site was scheduled to close on April 11, but LA Mayor Eric Garcetti said his city would take over on April 12.
