FROMA HARROP: A jerk and his job may soon be parted | Opinion

In the course of a human event, he or she can do so when a private employer needs to get rid of workers who appear to be bad for the business. This seems to be the fate of Jon Gruden, who resigned as Las Vegas Raiders football coach after a swarm of racist, sexist, and homosexual remarks came to light.

Americans have the inviolable right to jerk, within the limits of the law. However, businesses have the right to stay away from public figures who feel they are damaging their reputation. Whether you or I agree or are angry with it, the expressed emotions are less relevant here.

Actress Gina Carano has been fired from the cast of The Mandalorian and Star Wars. After she said that being a Republican today is like being a Jew during the Holocaust. But that was just the last straw. She previously posted a tweet mocking a face mask at the heart of the coronavirus pandemic, suggesting without evidence that the 2020 presidential election is plagued by fraudulent elections.

Carano could be right-wing off the wall as her dark little heart wanted, but the United Talent Agency was not obliged to retain toxic clients. Also, Disney + was not obliged to keep her in the “Star Wars” franchise.

Pillow Guy has pushed beyond the limits of dignity by attacking democratic institutions with a moralic lie about the 2020 election results. Coles, Bed Bath & Beyond, and many other chains had every right to protect the retail environment by clearing his MyPillow products from the shelves.

Mike Lindell may also have violated the law by making false allegations that Dominion Voting Systems equipment has transferred votes from Donald Trump to Joe Biden. Dominion filed a $ 1.3 billion defamation proceeding against him, claiming that these lies were detrimental to his profits and endangered his workers.

There was that moment on the left as well. In 2017, comedian Kathy Griffin was widely blacklisted after posting a photo of herself holding a ketchup blood-covered playing card mask. (It looked like a severed head.) This was a very bad taste that seemed to be a threat to the president. In any case, the head incident almost ended Griffin’s show business career and saved a documentary about herself.

The Declaration of Independence states that “properly respecting the views of mankind” requires unfortunate parties to “declare the causes that drive them to separate.”

Gruden provided enough causes. He described the facial features of De Maurice Smith, the Black Executive Director of the NFL Players Association, in racist language. He called the league commissioner Roger Goodell various names. He expressed frustration that Goodell pressured Rams coaches to draft a “queer.” This is an open reference to gay Sam. He suggested that the owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers commit sexual intercourse to him.

A somewhat related issue is the business reason that team owners do not want players to spend their time in the field to spread the message about social justice. Kneeling during the national anthem, while the underlying concerns are valid, attack many fans as unpatriotic.

When his team was so successful, there were times when a football coach was allowed almost everything. The list of things allowed is shorter than before, which is a victory for civilization.

At the end of the day, Raiders ownership had the right to expect coaches to cover offensive remarks under a $ 100 million contract. We learn once again that Jerk and his work may soon break up.
