Fresno State reveals this year’s speaker for President’s Lecture Series

More than two years after the global pandemic, Fresno President Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval has chosen an appropriate topic for the Lecture Series of his first term as President. Angela Duckworth, known for her Speech at TEDwill be this year’s guest, through a virtual presentation.

Jiménez-Sandoval receives a copy of Duckworth’s bookGrit: The Power of Passion and PerseveranceBy Brian Panish, a Los Angeles-based lawyer and former Bulldog player named Fresno State’s Top Dog Distinguished Alumnus in 2019.

“After reading the book, it sparked a discussion between us,” said Jiménez-Sandoval. “From there, it was a natural next step to share the richness of this book with the campus and our community. “Grit is the fundamental lecture because I see it as an inherent feature of our students – which is very well reflected in the spirit and ethos of our Valley communities.”

Duckworth is its founder and CEO Character workshop, a non-profit organization with a mission to promote scientific knowledge that helps children thrive. She is also a professor at Rosa Lee and Egbert Chang University in Pennsylvania.

In her research, Duckworth wanted to find out why some people succeed while others fail. He found that people who showed toughness – the tendency to pursue long-term goals with passion and perseverance – were more likely to perform well.

The President’s Lecture Series will be delivered by 4 to 5:30 p.m. April 21 via Zoom webinar. Pre-registration will be required for the free online event.

Asked about his vision for these lectures in the future, Jiménez-Sandoval said: “I am interested in exploring the character and diversity of our region. “As identity has been the core tenet of my research and teaching agenda, I want to explore the multifaceted value of the identities we see in our Valley, in order to forge a stronger sense of community and build stronger bridges of communication between them.”

The series of lectures by the President, which began in 2016, includes prominent national guests who were invited to the campus by the President of the University. Previous guests include NPR White House correspondent Tamara Keith (2020), Washington Post political reporter Robert Costa (four times, most recently in 2020), New York Times columnist David Brooks (2016), Presidential Historian Doris Kearns Goodwin (2016), New York Times Foreign Relations columnist Thomas L. Friedman (2017), Presidential Historian Michael Beschloss (2018) and publishing executive Steve Forbes (2019).

The show is co-sponsored by The Fresno Bee, KSEE24, Valley PBS and Valley Public Radio.
