Fresno State announces new provost

Dr. Xuanning Fu has been named the new Fresno State Academic Vice President and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Since January 2021 he has been serving as a temporary protector.

The President of the State of Fresno, Dr. Jiménez-Sandoval announced Fu’s appointment on June 8. The professor is the chief academic director of the University and serves as its leader when the president is away from campus.

“Since his temporary appointment, Dr. “Fu has worked closely with faculty, leadership and students across our campus to ensure that Fresno State remains a competitive leader in academic excellence,” said Jiménez-Sandoval. “I am grateful for Dr. Fu’s focused and heartfelt efforts during the pandemic. “His know-how, his careful and consistent vision for Academic Affairs and his collaborative and consulting approach have given the department a clear direction and solid leadership.”

Fu came to the United States as an international student and worked at Brigham Young University-Hawaii and the University of California, Merced, before beginning his career at Fresno State as a faculty member in the Department of Sociology in 2003.

Fu previously served as Deputy Dean of the College of Social Sciences, Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Vice President prior to his appointment as Interim Professor.

“I am humbled and honored by the trust placed in me by the faculty, staff, search committee and President Jiménez-Sandoval, and I appreciate the support of the campus and community members,” Fu said. “I am determined and energetic to further promote student success and teaching / staff excellence, empowering everything I work with to prepare and educate the next generation of leaders in the Valley and around the world.”

When Fresno State set up an emergency committee in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, with representatives from all areas of the campus, Fu represented the campus’s academic interests during the first 15 months of the crisis. In addition, Fu co-chaired the COVID design team, assisting in guiding decisions about campus overcrowding and security protocols.

Fu was instrumental in helping Fresno State receive two recent grants – a $ 1.26 million grant by the Ministry of Education to increase representation of the Asia-Pacific Islands in criminal and civil careers, and $ 1.25 million grant by the National Science Foundation to increase the representation of the female engineering school at CSU.

“As President of the Academic Senate, I’m glad to hear that Dr. Fu will be our new professor,” he said. Raymond Hall, professor of physics in the state of Fresno. “His list of achievements in the State of Fresno is impressive, especially in the areas of student success and teacher support, and I look forward to continuing our fruitful collaboration with him in this new capacity.”

Fu earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in China and taught at Ocean University in China as an assistant professor of English before coming to the United States in 1989 to continue his education. He received his PhD in Sociology in 1994 from Brigham Young University.

In his spare time, Fu enjoys nature photography and photo editing with Photoshop, as well as traveling and reading history.
