Fresno police identify arson suspect accused of setting fire that killed 2 young children

FRESNO, California (KFSN) – New worrying details are emerging about the man who, according to police, deliberately started a deadly fire in a house.

Investigators say he was the uncle of the two young children who died and their mother’s brother-in-law who was seriously injured.

Police say they set it on fire “to kill everyone in the house”.

Fresno police have identified the man accused of deliberately starting a deadly house fire in western Fresno on Tuesday as 29-year-old Filimon “Robert” Hurtado.

The suspect was staying at home with his brother, sister-in-law, niece and nephew.

“In this case, there is really no rhyme or reason to do something so horrible, he did not give us an explanation,” said Fresno Police Lt. Paul Cervantes.

Officials say the suspect confessed to the fire to paramedics and firefighters. Officers were then called.

Fresno police say they believe the 32-year-old mother was awake at the time and Hurtado used gasoline to set it on fire.

“The mother came to the doorstep and met her brother-in-law, Filimon” Robert “Hurtado and, some time later, lit a fire and then left the house,” said Lieutenant Cervantes.

She ran across the street to alert a neighbor to call 911 and the fire eventually reached the room where she and her two young children were staying.

A memorial service was set up outside the home on Wednesday for the suspect’s 18-month-old niece Cataleya and 5-month-old niece Calyx.

The children’s father, the suspect’s brother, had left for work before the fire started.

Investigators say Hurtado had no criminal record and that police had not been called home before.

Detectives are still trying to determine the motive and hope that the 32-year-old mother will succeed.

“We hope the mother will be able to recover from this incident, but I can tell you that it will be a long process for her,” said Lieutenant Cervantes.

Officials say the suspect had severe burns and is being treated at the hospital.

Once released, he will be jailed in Fresno County Jail on two counts of murder, attempted murder and arson-related crimes.
