Fresno police hold first DUI checkpoint of year

FRESNO, California (KFSN) – Fresno police removed six DUI drivers from the street overnight at the first DUI checkpoint of the year.

12 officers set up checkpoints in First and Tulare.

This was in addition to five patrols patrolling the streets, specifically looking for DUI drivers.

Fresno police say that in addition to road safety for the public, these checkpoints serve as an opportunity for public education.

Last year, there were 58 deaths from vehicles in the city. 14 of them were related to the DUI, killing 17 people.

This is the first of many random checkpoints to occur during the year.

Each is funded by the Road Safety Bureau.
