CHILDREN across North Ayrshire can enjoy free school meals at community centers from today.
The initiative will be available to all children eligible for free school meals from July 4 to August 12.
Children from both primary and secondary schools can come to 18 food outlets between 11.30am and 2.30pm every weekday to receive a free lunch.
Councilor Tony Gurney said: “The scheme has been running for the better part of a decade.
“The children really welcomed the free school meals in the holidays because they were full and could take part in a range of activities, so they also saw people.
“It was very rewarding for the parents, they’re all trying to do the best they can for their children, but they’re just being let down by the welfare state, which doesn’t give people enough to live on.”
The initiative also includes free events held in community centers and open to all children, whether or not they qualify for free school meals.
The events do not require registration as children can simply turn up on the day if they wish to take part.
Although the program is primarily aimed at children from disadvantaged backgrounds, places such as Whitlees Community Center in Ardrossan have said they will not turn away any child who comes for lunch.
A spokesperson for the center said: “We run fun days and the children get free lunches.
“With gas and electricity going up and the cost of living going up, I think more kids will come to eat because they don’t know when they’re going to get a hot meal.
“At Easter, we used to have 50 to 75 dinners a day, now there are about a hundred of them.”
Families eligible for free school meals will also receive a £10 weekly grocery voucher per child during the summer holidays.
They can be redeemed at community centers and local shops.
Arran Outdoor Education Centre, Fairlie Library, Millport Library, Skelmorlie Library will be holding periodic events for children.
