France’s youngest president wins again, troubles and all

At just five years old, he has gone from being a French president, Emmanuel Macron, a newcomer to politics, a leading figure in the world and an important decision-maker in the European Union.

In the two-person field, Macron defeated Conservative candidate Marine Le Pen 59-41. It was the second time the two had faced each other in the presidential election. Macron defeated Le Pen five years ago by a two-to-one difference.

Russia has been heavily involved in ending the war in Ukraine. And now he has won his second term, according to opinion polls – the first French president to do so in a generation.

That’s despite protests like the yellow vest protests and the pandemic, and voters believe he is arrogant and a “president of the rich”. His unusual marriage to a 24-year-old woman has attracted attention.

He paid a moving tribute to his wife at the biggest campaign rally, calling Brigitte Macron “the person I care about the most.”
