Founder of famous Fresno taco truck La Elegante dies

FRESNO, California (KFSN) – The well-known founder of an iconic truck and taco shop in Fresno has died.

Benito Arenas, known to many as Don Benito, founded La Elegante with his wife, Celia, in 1985.

He died Sunday of health complications at the age of 88.

For decades, Benito appeared in the famous blue taco truck and later in the store he and his family opened in Chinatown.

It was one of the first taco trucks in the Fresno area.

The normal point of the truck in the early days was near the old Pick-A-Part off Muscat and Maple.

Benito’s enduring legacy is the work ethic he and Celia instilled in their seven children.

All of them – at some point – have worked for the restaurant.

It gave them a special experience to bond with the man behind the window of the taco truck.

“I would look at my dad, the way people responded to him … his talent,” says Adolfo Arenas.

Now they look through photos, remembering his crunchy appearance, his perfect mustache … and his love for mariachis.

For decades, the Arenas family has fed Fresno taco lovers – and while they stop mourning the loss of their patriarch, they will continue the legacy.

“Benito has been and will always be a symbol here in the local Fresno area in terms of tacos and restaurants,” Ray Ortiz told the Fresno Street Eats.

The Arenas family invites the public to attend Rosario and Benito’s funeral this weekend.
The screening will take place at 4 p.m. on Friday 1 July. It will take place at Lisle Funeral Home at 1605 L Street. Rodario will follow the screening from 6 to 8 in the afternoon.

The funeral procession will take place on Saturday, July 2, at the Church of Agios Alfonos at 11 a.m. The St. Alphonsus is located at 351 E. Kearney Blvd.
