A former San Jose employee has today been sentenced to 35 years in prison after being convicted of soliciting bribes and extorting sex from owners of massage parlors.
William Gary, 47, was also found guilty of harassing two people years ago when they were children, according to a statement from Santa Clara County District Attorney on May 20.
Gary, who worked for city law enforcement between 2007 and 2019 and moved to McKinney, Texas, received more than $ 140,000 from these blackmail victims between 2017 and 2019. Instead of paying, he forced some of his victims to have sex with him.
“This man has abused his power over some of the most vulnerable members of our community – immigrants and children,” District Attorney Jeff Rosen said in a statement. “It’s confusing and criminal when people use their credible position of authority to hurt people who expect them to help.”
Gary was charged in November 2020 with criminal offenses of extortion of massage institute employees and owners. In return, he protected them from police raids by passing on confidential information he had received from law enforcement authorities as part of his job.
After indictments related to extortion and sexual assault of massage parlor owners were filed, further investigation revealed sexual abuse crimes that lasted decades back. Two victims appeared before them who were sexually assaulted by Gary when they were children, prosecutors said.
One of the victims who showed up was attacked by Gary when he was the leader of a youth group in their church. Another victim was a relative whom Gary abused when she was a little girl.
Today, at 24, she was in the courtroom in San Jose today and said: “The defendant is due to serve 35 short prison terms for his crimes and although I am grateful that he will be locked up and society will be kept for now, I can not help but sit in pain knowing I am serving a life sentence because He chose to ruin my life for his own enjoyment. “
