But this was not always the plan for the California resident, who revealed that his youthful embarrassment made him so tongue-tied to strangers, he could not even order his own food in restaurants.

Born in 1991 to his late mother Lori Anne, an esthetician, and realtor David Butler, the boy had one older sister, Ashley.

After their parents divorced amicably, when Austin was seven years old, the siblings would move between their respective homes.

Although the family ‘did not have much money’, in Austin’s words, Lori Anne was able to buy season tickets for Disneyland nearby.

She would occasionally skip the two kids a day of school, and the trio would enjoy a day at the amusement park.

As a child, Austin showed an interest in the arts, and taught himself to play guitar and piano at a young age.

However, his involvement in acting came about by chance when he was 10 years old.

Speaking against Vanity Fair in 2020 Austin revealed that it was while with tagging when his stepbrother went to LA for a commercial audition, he was asked if he would read in part as well.

According to Austin: ‘I do not know what happened to me, but I said yes. They gave me a commercial – Oreos or Welch’s grape juice or something – and I went for a camera to all those kids.

“I was shaking, but I did it, and that allowed me to be 10 years old.”

After having a regular job as a background actor on the Nickelodeon show Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide in 2005, Austen got a manager and started acting seriously.

In the years that followed, he worked productively, winning roles in Disney’s Hannah Montana as well as in Nickelodeon series including iCarly and Zoey 101.

Film roles in Aliens in the Attic from 2009, followed by Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure. Meanwhile, he has appeared in TV shows including CSI: Miami, The Defenders and Arrow among others.

He also starred in a play alongside veteran actor Denzel Washington in 2018, and took a role in The Iceman Cometh on Broadway.

But the young star, who left high school 15-and-a-half, had even bigger ambitions.

As he revealed to GQHe always had high aspirations when it came to the kind of productions he wanted to act in, citing Raging Bull, The Basketball Diaries and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape as films he admired.

“I printed out the Pulp Fiction script when I was 12, and I would read it to my mother in the car,” he said.

‘That was my dream of 12 years old. I said, “Quentin [Tarantino] is the director I want to work with. “

That wish came true when he played Tex Watson, a rabid Manson follower, in the iconic director’s 2019 film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

Austin was escorted to the film’s premiere in 2019 with his then-girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens, 33, who ended their relationship in early 2020, after nearly nine years together.

Since then, he confirmed his relationship with Kaia Gerber, Cindy Crawford’s 20-year-old model and daughter in March this year, after the couple were first spotted together at the end of 2021.

However, he remained tight-lipped about the relationship, telling GQ he did not want to share it.

Austen prefers instead to discuss his acting work, even if it includes painful details about his personal life.

After trying to film an audition tape for the film, and feeling that it was not authentic, the actor desperately went to bed where he had a nightmare that his mother was alive again, but died.

Just days earlier, Austen had learned that Elvis had also lost his mother when he was 23, and was thinking about how he could use the parallel.

He told Vogue: ‘I was sitting at the piano in my bathrobe and just starting to feel. I’ve been practicing Unchained Melody for a while now, but I’ve always had it sung for a lover.

‘That night I sang it for my mother. I tried not to look and sound like Elvis. I tried to do nothing but take that emotion and shine in the song. ‘

Despite the lack of polish – Austin wore his dressing gown in the tape – the video was compelling enough to win him the eponymous role of the film, despite director Baz Luhrmann considering bigger names like Harry Styles.

Now the film has finally been released, after a boring production schedule that included long delays due to Covid, praise have already begun to flow for her star.

Figures from the industry now expect great success for their star. In fact, Luhrmann, who compared Leonardo DiCaprio in his 1990s adaptation of Romeo and Juliet to the two actors, suggests Austin can expect the same trajectory.

Speaking to GQ, he said: ‘I think Leonardo recognized what Austin was about to go through. The difference for Austin, and this is fortunate, is that Austin looks very young, but he is 30. ‘
