Gonzales — Pape Material Handling will begin switching operations from Salinas to Gonzales this month.
The new 25,000-square-foot building will be handed over to the company on June 21, and shelves will be installed and equipment and personnel will be brought in.
Pape is now located outside Salinas on John Street, just off Highway 101. The company is headquartered in Eugene, Oregon and has 29 offices in five states. The Monterey County base has 35 employees, one-third working in the office and the other two-thirds working offsite, providing material processing equipment such as forklifts and aerial lifts.
With the company’s rental properties operating outside the Gonzales Industrial Park, this location will place Pape in a more centralized environment within the region.
Matthew Santo, Director of Community Development in Gonzales, said:
The company’s switch to Gonzales means more local employment opportunities and higher tax revenues. Santo said the city is another feather of the city as it also serves as a location for Taylor Farms, Braga Fresh Family Farms, Manpacking and more.
In addition, the city still has more space available in the business park.
“We have a lot of land available,” Sundt said. “A multiple of a two-acre parcel.”
Sundt said Gonzales will be able to offer an expanded wastewater treatment plant in addition to the new central location.
“We are in the process of developing a plan to add one million gallons to a wastewater treatment plant dedicated to industrial users,” he said.
Gonzales currently has 1.3 million gallons of permitted wastewater per day for commercial, residential and industrial streams.
“Pape is coming and it’s perfect for ag parks and the city,” Sundt said.
