Foodie Friday: Anchor Bar | San Marcos Record

The home of the original Buffalo Wing has arrived in San Marcos.

The Anchor Bar opened this week, bringing with it delicious chicken wings, a wide variety of bar dishes and cold drinks.

This new San Marcos restaurant has a simple history to claim its reputation. In 1964, Dominic Bellissimo was managing a bar at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York when a group of friends came to the bar in search of food. Bellissimo’s mother, Teressa, placed chicken wings in a fryer and flavored them with a secret sauce.

“The wings were a direct hit and it didn’t take long for people to flock to the bar to experience this new flavor,” Anchor Bar said on its website. “From that night on, Buffalo wings became a regular part of the menu at Anchor Bar. The phenomenon created in 1964 by Teressa Bellissimo has spread around the world. Although many have tried to copy the Buffalo wings, the secret recipe is what makes Frank and Teressa the “Best Wings in the World”.

What to get

As a self-proclaimed fan of chicken wings, the opening of the Anchor Bar was much anticipated. The original bar with chicken wings did not disappoint.

Wanting to go with something less messy during a daily lunch, I opted for Anchor Bar anchor bites – boneless chicken wings. I went with the snack size, which comes with eight boneless wings for $ 8. You can also get anchor bites in 12-count, 16-county, 32-count and a platter with 80 boneless wings.

I went with the eight anchor bites to the spicy garlic parmesan of Anchor Bar and added ragged food to make it a meal. These buffalo bites were as delicious as expected. The buffalo sauce was nice and spicy but not too hot. Garlic parmesan is well mixed with buffalo sauce to make a delicious combination.

Anchor Bar has a wide variety of sauces, such as mango habanero, buffalo lemon pepper, honey sriracha, honey garlic, honey bourbon bbq and extreme (if you dare!). There are also many options for dry rubbing between Cajun, lemon pepper, garlic parmesan and habanero ranch with lime.

If you are looking for the traditional feather selection, Anchor Bar offers a snack size (five wings for $ 9), a medium size (eight wings for $ 14), a single size (10 wings for $ 17), a double size (20 wings for 34 $) and a plate with 50 wings for $ 85.

French fries, wedges or broccoli can be added to make a meal for an extra $ 2.50.

During our visit to Anchor Bar, my partner chose to try the hatch burger. This 8-ounce brisket and chuck burger topped with green chili, pepper cheese and a sunny egg on top for $ 13.49. My food partner was very impressed with this burger, saying that it was ranked among the top three he tasted during the two years of Friday food.

The Anchor Bar offers many other options for burgers and sandwiches, such as The American, which is accompanied by an 8-ounce brisket and American cheese, lettuce and caramelized onion brioche. and tender buffalo sandwich – crispy or grilled tender chicken tossed in the authentic Anchor Bar feather sauce and served with lettuce, caramelized onions and a ranch side on a freshly baked Kaiser roll.

There is also a BBQ bacon, mac & cheese burger and patty melt.

Maybe you’re in the mood for pizza, the Anchor Bar has that too. You can make your own pizza or you can order from their specialty pies. The Anchor bar offers barbecue chicken pizza, buffalo chicken pizza, white pizza, all-meat pizza and excellent pizza.

For those who love their health, Anchor Bar prepares a Cobb salad with mixed greens, avocado, shredded blue cheese, tomatoes, croutons, crispy or grilled chicken and bacon. a pecan chicken salad with mixed greens, tomatoes, shredded blue cheese, grated pecans, croutons and crispy or grilled chicken served with bilberry pomegranate vinaigrette. and a buffalo salad with chicken, which is the Anchor Bar salad with grilled or crispy chicken with the Original Anchor Bar sauce of your choice.
