Fontana P.D. is alarmed that governor may cut funding for Internet Crimes Against Children program | News

Members of the Fontana Police Department’s Internet Crime Against Children (ICAC) Task Force are alarmed that funding for the ICAC California program has been cut from the budget proposed by Governor Gavin Newsom for 2022-23.

Without funding, California will eliminate dedicated ICAC personnel responsible for combating child sexual exploitation and abuse, Fontana PD said in a May 4 press release.

The Fontana PD ICAC unit is one of the busiest in the country, with six full-time investigators and one K9 specially trained in finding computer equipment.

In addition, ICAC Fontana detectives have helped police agencies across Southern California and across the county begin their ICAC units.

Last year, ICAC Fontana detectives wrote hundreds of search warrants and received more than 670 cyber tips from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). They conducted more than 800 criminal investigations and medically examined more than 1,900 electronic devices, 600 hard disks and 500,000 gigabytes of files containing child pornography, resulting in over 120 arrests.

“This unit has rescued children by removing them from abusive homes. “Without this funding, detectives would not be able to identify child predators living in our community,” reads the PD announcement.

The DP is urging Newsom to reconsider this budget exemption in its review in May. The deadline for final budget approval is approaching, the DP said.

The DP encouraged locals concerned about ICAC funding to write to the governor and their state representatives.
