The CDC recommended that children be vaccinated in November, when the vaccine became available to most children. Since then, approximately 22 million children have been fully vaccinated, including 1.1 million children from Florida.

However, Florida Surgeon General Joseph Landapo said the state was going to issue separate instructions urging parents not to vaccinate their children. Ladapo did not say when this guidance would become official and provided some additional details.

Florida will become the first state to withdraw from the CDC for childhood vaccines.

The announcement from Ladapo came at the end of a 90-minute discussion among some of the medical community’s most vocal skeptics about pandemic mitigation measures. The event, hosted by Florida Gov. Ron DeSadis, was highly critical of the CDC and the governments that took steps to slow the spread of the virus through masked commands and shutdown measures.

Several of the doctors and scientists on the DeSantis panel shared unproven concerns about the safety of the vaccine for children.

Children who have been vaccinated against Covid-19 are less likely to be treated for Covid-19 infections than children who have not been vaccinated, recent data show.

Vaccinated elementary school students are almost half as likely to have a Covid-19 case that led to treatment in an emergency clinic or emergency room than children who were not vaccinated, according to a large CDC-funded study.

Nearly 4.5 million children have had Covid since the beginning of January.

Children infected with Covid-19 may develop multisystem inflammatory syndrome weeks later. This rare disease can lead to dangerous complications, causing inflammation in parts of the body. MIS-C can affect important organs, including the kidneys, brain, lungs and heart.

The vaccine is not yet available for children under 5 years of age. About 25% of Florida’s eligible child population is vaccinated, compared with 30% nationally.

Ladapo has come under fire for his criticism of his appointment as head of the Florida Department of Health last year. Ladapo gained attention during the pandemic after writing a series of op-eds that challenged the consensus scientific opinion on vaccines, masks and mitigation strategies. It has also promoted unproven therapies for Covid-19, such as ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine.

The Florida Senate confirmed Ladapo became the state’s general surgeon last month. During his confirmation hearing, he declined to say whether he had been vaccinated and would not answer questions from lawmakers about the effectiveness of the vaccines.

Ladapo recently issued new directives that discouraged private companies from requiring their employees to wear masks.
