Evacuations ordered after construction uncovers old artillery shell in Oceanside

Construction workers found what appeared to be an old shell on the oceanside Wednesday afternoon, urging evacuation and a request for assistance to Camp Pendleton, police officials said.

The device was found at around 12:15 pm on South Tremont Street, just north of Oceanside Transit Center, a hub adjacent to the beaches of buses, trains and sprinters.

Oceanside officials called a nearby marine base that had sent a weapons team to handle the situation, said Oceanside Police Lieutenant Taurino Baldobinos.

Roads in the area, a few blocks south of Oceanside Wharf, have been closed and homes and businesses within 300 feet of the device have been evacuated, he said. Bus service was diverted from the transit center.
