Euro 2020 Monday and Tuesday Last 16 Preview

Euro 2020 is at the last 16 stage and already we’ve seen a big shock. Sunday saw the Czech Republic defy the odds to beat the Netherlands to progress to the last eight. Saturday had seen wins for Denmark and Italy, though the Italians finally conceded a goal. Sunday evening saw Belgium knock out defending champions Portugal.

Now let’s look ahead to the final four games being played on Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 June. Just who should you be placing bets on at sportsbooks to make it into the last eight at Euro 2020?

Monday 28 June

Croatia v Spain (5pm) – Venue: Copenhagen

Spain won this tournament in both 2008 and 2012, can they become European champions for a record fourth time? They need to improve to get anywhere near achieving that feat. The Spaniards finished second behind Sweden in Group E, winning just one of their three matches.

They managed to get lots of possession but until the 5-0 win over Slovakia didn’t produce the goods in front of goal. If this goes to penalties, then after misses in the group stages, Croatia might just fancy the odds on them getting a surprise win.

Croatia also had an inconsistent time in the group stages. They put in a poor performance against England, losing 1-0 in their opening match. Croatia came from behind to get a draw with the Czech Republic (not that bad a result after Sunday’s result) and then beat Scotland 3-1 to finish second in the group.

Only three of their last ten games has been won. They’d gone four without a win before beating Scotland. The odds are that Spain can progress in a game that may well have under 2.5 goals scored in it.

France v Switzerland (8pm) – Venue: Budapest

Sportsbooks still have France as favourites to add the European crown to their world title. It’s not getting easier for them though even if they did win the Group of Death. They didn’t get into top gear during their games with Germany, Hungary and Portugal with only one win. The injury list is piling up as well with Dembele out and doubts over Digne, Hernandez, Thuram and Lemar.

Switzerland finished third in Group A with one win over Turkey. They are not an easy side to beat but aside from the 2018/19 Nations League never go deep in tournaments. Xherdan Shaqiri scored twice against the Turks and will be a threat here. The group loss to Italy is the only game they have lost in their last ten games. France should still be able to get the win though, time for Mbappe to step up a gear.

Tuesday 29 June

England v Germany (5pm) – Venue: Wembley, London

These two countries have a great rivalry but that’s the past, now for the present. England won Group D without conceding a goal but haven’t impressed that many with their displays. Bets on them to win the title may well become losing ones after this match.

They undoubtedly have a lot of talent but there’s little excitement being generated by them. How is that the case when you have players like Sterling, Foden, Grealish, Rashford and Kane. The last of those named needs to up his game. Kane will possibly get chances against an ageing German side that struggles to keep clean sheets.

Germany finished second in the Group of Death but struggled to do so. They were behind in all three of their matches but fought back well to get a win over Portugal. It looked as if they might fail to get out of the group stages when trailing twice to Hungary. They saved their skin though and their attack may well prosper against England. Sweden v Ukraine (8pm) Venue – Glasgow, Scotland

It’s not exactly saving the best for last, but this should be an interesting match. Sweden earned seven points to finish top of Group E. They now take on Ukraine who didn’t impress a great deal when finishing third in Group C.

Sweden are unbeaten in their last eight games, conceding in just two of them. It took a late goal to win them Group E, but they are proving a difficult team to beat, though the odds say that they’re  unlikely to become European champions.

Ukraine aren’t a difficult team to beat having lost two of their three group matches. Their only win was over North Macedonia and they have only won two of their last 12 games. They struggle on the road and it’s an idea to take the odds on a Sweden win with under 2.5 goals scored.
