Enough of the nonsense, Robert Luna for Los Angeles County Sheriff: Endorsement – Press Telegram

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department needs competent and professional leadership. It is the third largest local police agency in the country and is still marked by many years of scandal and crime in its ranks. Sheriff Alex Villanueva has shown that he is unable to meet these basic standards. It’s time to dump her and move on.

Villanueva was elected a progressive reformer four years ago. In addition to having the support of the House of Representatives, he was even supported by the Los Angeles County Democratic Party. However, in taking office, Villanueva quickly revealed that his approach to the post was fundamentally friendly and politically cynical.

One of his first actions, after taking office in December 2018, was to reinstate a deputy who had been fired amid allegations of domestic violence and harassing behavior. The deputy, Carl Mandoyan, had volunteered for the Villanueva campaign.

This, in turn, provoked not only an ongoing dispute between county officials outraged by the fact that Villanueva intended to reinstate such a person in a simple act of friendship, but a legal battle that continued to linger despite a judge handed down the sentence. in favor of the council. move to block reinstatement in 2020.

More recently, Villanueva has been accused by high-ranking officials in his department of trying to cover up an incident in which a deputy knelt at the head of a handcuffed prisoner. As part of this particular case, Villanueva shamefully addressed Los Angeles Times reporter Alene Tchekmedyian, who made the story known, by showing her image during a press conference and suggesting she was under investigation.

Although he later backtracked on his comments that he was under investigation, this kind of incoherent bully is what people expect from Villanueva. One of Villanueva’s defining trends in recent years has been his commitment to investigations into gangs and cliques of deputies in the sheriff’s department.

That’s enough.

There are several candidates running to replace Villanueva, most of whom work or have worked for the sheriff’s department. We believe that an outside perspective is needed. Consequently, we believe that former Long Beach police chief Robert Luna is the best choice for those seeking a necessary shift to normalcy and integrity in the leadership of the sheriff’s department.
