Efforts to combat hate crimes against AAPI communities

Dr. Michelle Au is the first Asian-American woman elected to the Georgian Senate. He is also a strong voice and leader in the American and Pacific community in Asia.

In March 2021, a 22-year-old white man killed eight people at three spas near Atlanta. Six were women of Asian descent.

In the wake of the shootings, the AAPI Democratic Caucus submitted three bills to the Georgia state government. Both are based on community outreach, requesting 911 operators and requesting police translation services. The third bill required a five-day wait to purchase a weapon.

“Since we removed these bills and at the end of this past session, these bills have gone nowhere. Despite hearing all the rhetoric and all the terrible sympathy we heard and heard from the people of Asia, no legislative action was taken.” said Dr. Au.

At the federal level, President Joe Biden signed legislation that facilitates the registration and reporting of hate crimes and violence against Asian Americans.

Prior to the Atlanta shootings, in the COVID-19 pandemic, such crimes had already risen.

Between March 2020 and December 2021, nearly 11,000 incidents were reported to the “Stop AAPI Hate” promoter group.

Recently, Illinois and New Jersey passed laws requiring the teaching of Asian American studies in K-12 schools. And in California, lawmakers introduced two bills aimed at combating harassment and violence against the AAPI community in public spaces.

Although frustrated by the lack of progress in the Georgian legislature, Dr. Au says that great strides are being made at the community level.

“I will say that where we lacked progress in terms of legislation, we were able to pass the final session in a way that community leaders, organizers, activists were able to gather that energy and mourning to a greater extent. Increasing Asian American visibility,” Dr. Au said.
