Edison International and Southern California Edison are already accepting applications for 2022 Edison Lineworker International Scholarship Program, partnership with IBEW Local 47 to provide opportunities for different people to become line workers in the SCE.

“We continue to be inspired every day by the hard work and determination of Line Workers’ scientists for 2021,” said Heather Rivard, SCE’s senior vice president of transmission and distribution. “It is truly an honor to provide this opportunity to the next class of diverse applicants and to support their pursuit of a career working to serve our clients.”

Serving one of the most diverse populations in the country, Edison International and SCE believe it is crucial to have a workforce that reflects the communities they serve. The ongoing focus for the four-year pilot program is on attracting black participants, as the current percentage of black workers in the SCE is smaller than the black population in the communities it serves.

Launched last year, the program provides the training, tools and support services needed to complete the necessary training in College of Commerce in Los Angeles. Agreement with Crusade of the Brotherhood will help with support services if needed, such as housing, transportation and childcare. The $ 1 million scholarship program is funded by shareholders of Edison International and IBEW Local 47 and gives up to $ 25,000 per recipient.

Graduates will be entitled to a countryman / dugout entry-level position in the SCE, after completing the Powerline Mechanic Certificate program, receive a Class A driver’s license and meet all SCE requirements prior to employment. All jobs will be located in the SCE’s 50,000-square-mile service area, and the company may require graduates to relocate to their positions.

According to Wikipedia, “the liner, power line technician (PLT) or power line worker, designs and maintains electric transmission and distribution facilities that supply electricity to industrial, commercial and residential sites. The liner worker installs, maintains and repairs electrical lines in the event of lightning, wind, ice storm or ground disturbances. While line workers typically work on outdoor installations, those who install and maintain electrical cables inside buildings are electricians
