Shadow Cabinet Minister Ed Miliband yesterday refused to rule out Labor moving to legalize cannabis.

The former opposition leader, who supported decriminalization four years ago, said the party would “look after” the results of a drug commission set up by Sadiq Khan.

De London mayor described a cannabis dispensary as ‘fascinating’ during a visit to Los Angeles, California, last week. Mr Khan has no authority to change drug laws, but has revealed that he has appointed former Secretary of Justice Lord Falconer to lead the investigation.

Mr. Miliband replied, when asked if he would see Class B cannabis legalized in the UK, “That is not Labor’s position, no. We welcome Sadiq who is looking into these issues, because this debate must continue.

“But the Labor Shadow’s position is that we are not yet convinced of the reason for continuing with decriminalization.”

Home Secretary Priti Patel criticized Mr Khan’s move, saying his “time would be better spent concentrating on knife and drug crime in London”. The commission will not look at more dangerous class A drugs.

In 2018, Mr Miliband, now spokesman for Labor Climate Change, supported a call in a newspaper article by former Tory leader William Hague for the legalization of cannabis.

Lord Hague wrote that the UK’s drug policy was ‘inappropriate, ineffective and outdated’ and the ‘battle is effectively over’.
