Dwayne Haskins, a Heisman Trophy finalist in Ohio State and a Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, died this weekend when he got under a vehicle, his agent Cedric Saunders told AdamN Schefter of ESPN.
He was 24 years old.
Haskins practiced in South Florida with other Steelers players (such as Najee Harris, Chase Claypool and Mitchell Trubisky) when he died Saturday morning.
He led the Buckeyes to the Big Ten Championship and won the Rose Bowl in the 2018 season.
The Washington Redkins selected the signal caller as 15th place and spent two seasons there before joining Pittsburgh last year.
“I am shocked and speechless by the unfortunate departure of Dwayne Haskins,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in a statement.
“He quickly became part of the Steelers family when he arrived in Pittsburgh and was one of our toughest workers both on the field and in our community. Dwayne was a great teammate, but even more so a huge friend to so many.
“I’m really broke my heart.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Kalabrya and his entire family during this difficult time.”
Haskins Ohio State teammate Joe Burrow also shared his condolences on Twitter and wrote online today:
“Hard to find words … you’ll be missed.”
Haskins played 15 games in Washington over two seasons, giving a total QBR of 29.4.
He threw 12 touchdown passes and 14 abductions.
“We are shocked to hear the news of the tragic death of Dwayne Haskins Jr., command owners Daniel and Tanya Snyder said in a statement.
“He was a young man with tremendous potential and a contagious personality. It is an understatement to say we are broken.
“Our hearts and prayers are with the members of the Dwayne family and all those who knew him and loved him.”
Ron Rivera, who coached Haskins in Washington, added:
“I was quite upset to hear the news of the departure of Dwayne Haskins Jr. Dwayne was a talented young man with a long life ahead of him.
“This is a very sad time and I have the words to be honest. I know I’m speaking on behalf of the rest of our team saying he’s going to be very sad.
“Our entire team is sending our heartfelt condolences and thoughts and prayers to the Haskins family right now.”
We send our condolences to Dwayne Haskins ’friends, family and loved ones.
May he rest in peace.
