Sheboygan, Wisconsin — Dustin Johnson helped the United States take command of the Ryder Cup by doing something that American golfers haven’t accomplished for over 40 years.
Johnson was undefeated at Whistling Straits for two days, helping the United States lead Europe 11-5 in a singles match on Sunday. He is the first American to be 4-0 in team play since Larry Nelson in 1979.
“Everything works for Dustin,” said Collin Morikawa, who teamed up with Johnson for three of these victories.
37-year-old Johnson is the oldest player on the young US roster and occasionally provides coaching to teams featuring six Ryder Cup rookie. Johnson played in the last four Ryder Cup appearances this week with a record of 7-9.
“We are all intimate, so we all talk to and share our experiences, especially those who have played with them,” Johnson said. “Yes, I definitely talked to (teammates), especially everyone I’ve never played before.”
But the best way he has guided is by example. He teamed up with the Ryder Cup rookie on each victory.
Johnson and Morikawa defeated Paul Casey and Victor Hoblan 3 and 2 in the Foursome Competition on Friday. They beat Paul Casey and Tyrrell Hatton again on Saturday 2nd and 1st with Foursome. And they defeated Ian Poulter and Rory McIlroy 4 and 3 in a best ball match Saturday afternoon.
Johnson also teamed up with Xander Schauffele to win the Best Balls Tournament 2 and 1 on Friday afternoon against Berndwisberger and Paul Casey.
This represents a dramatic shift from his last Ryder Cup appearance. Johnson went to 1-4 when the United States lost 171 / 2-10 1/2 outside Paris three years ago.
“Sure, the golf course suits me a bit better than Paris,” Johnson said. “But yeah, that’s exactly what it is.”
The singles victory over Casey on Sunday will allow Johnson to rival Nelson’s achievements. Nelson finished Seve Ballesteros 5-0 in singles, leading the United States to victory in 1979. Francesco Molinari produced Europe’s first 5-0 Ryder Cup Performance 3. years ago.
Johnson’s team did not lag behind any of his last three games. Johnson and Morikawa won the first three holes in the match on Saturday morning, climbing from four holes to ten holes. When the lead fell to 1, they won the 15th hole to regain control.
In the afternoon match, they defeated Thailand and won three straight holes from 6-8 to stay ahead forever.
Johnson’s contribution goes beyond these four victories. Morikawa said Johnson also took leadership in men who had little experience with the Ryder Cup.
“He is a veteran,” Morikawa said. “He is the oldest man on our team and has very quiet leadership, but he is informing him of his existence. When he needs to say something, he does something. say.”
Johnson may feel the need to say something before the Sunday singles match. He joined the US team in 2012 and led 10-6 on the final day of the tournament as Europe rallyed to win 14½-13½ in the medina.
He wants to prevent the United States from wasting even greater advantages this time around.
“You know, it’s not over,” Johnson said. “We still need to go out and everyone needs to play well.”
