Driver of stolen pickup crashes twice near Otay Mesa West after fleeing sheriff’s deputies

The driver of a stolen pickup collided with two other vehicles on Friday night along Palm Avenue near Otay Mesa West after escaping from the sheriff’s deputies, authorities said.

The driver fled after the second collision, avoiding arrest, although police said they knew his identity, an officer said. A passenger of the second vehicle was slightly injured in the collision and was hit by the stolen pickup.

The chase started shortly after 9:25 p.m. on Otay Mesa Street as lawmakers tried to lure the driver of a gold Ford Ranger into a traffic violation, said San Diego Sheriff Lt. Scott Roller. The driver instead left quickly and the deputies chased, later learning that the pickup had been stolen.

At one point, lawmakers stopped chasing the truck – it was unclear whether they stopped the chase or lost sight of it – but continued to search for it, according to Roller and San Diego police officer Darius Jamsetjee. As they did so, passers-by lowered their hands to report a collision on Palm Avenue and Dennery Road just east of Interstate 805.

As lawmakers responded to the crash with a white Tesla sedan, San Diego police alerted them to a second crash about two miles away, on Palm Avenue and Beyer Way, Roller said.

One person in the second vehicle, a Toyota Highlander SUV, was slightly injured and taken by paramedics to a hospital, Jamsetjee said. It was not clear if anyone involved in the first clash was injured.

The driver ran away from the second scene of the collision and remained excellent late Friday night, Jamsetjee said. The driver is allegedly wanted on previous warranty charges related to vehicle theft charges.
