A driver being chased by Border Patrol was killed when his car crashed off Interstate 8 in El Cajon on Saturday, the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash happened at around 3pm on the freeway heading west near the Mollison Avenue exit, the CHP said. Witnesses estimated that the 2017 Infiniti sedan did more than 100 mph on the right shoulder while being chased, according to the CHP.
The Infiniti lost control, flew off the highway and crashed into a mound, hitting a tree, according to the CHP, and video of the wreckage from OnScene TV.
The driver, a 19-year-old man, was seriously injured and died on the spot, according to the CHP. His name was not released.
The Highway Patrol, which is investigating the crash, said they were still working to determine why the driver was being chased. A Border Patrol spokesman raised all questions with the CHP.
It was also unclear whether drugs or alcohol were a factor, according to the CHP.
