Driver arrested in Orange County after pursuit that began in Chula Vista

A man reported by authorities driving a stolen vehicle when he drove police officers from Chula Vista to Orange County was arrested Monday night, the California Highway Patrol said.

The incident started at around 5:49 p.m. when an officer patrolling a Broadway motel parking lot near F Street spotted a stolen vehicle, said Lt. Ernie Pinento of the Chula Vista Police Department.

While he was still in the parking lot, the police officer started a traffic stop on the white Kia Optima, but the driver fled and hit the police officer’s vehicle, according to Pinedo.

“The officer was not injured. “He was in the car with a seat belt, but he was shaken – just the fact that he had a car coming at him and hitting his police vehicle,” Pinento said.

The officer chased the Kia as it traveled east on State Routes 54 and 94 and on surface roads, then west on Interstate 8, with a law enforcement helicopter following from above.

CHP officers pursued Interstate 8 near Severin Drive in El Cajon, said CHP envoy John Schmitt.

At about 7:35 a.m., the car went over a spinning lane and at least one of its tires punctured. The vehicle could later be seen traveling north on Interstate 5 with severely damaged KTLA live tires.

Eventually, the car slowed down and stopped on Interstate 5, as soon as it crossed the Beach Boulevard overpass in Buena Park, Schmitt said. The lanes heading north closed as CHP officers tried to arrest the driver.

The man initially refused to get out of the vehicle and the CHP officer fired several balls of pepper at him while he remained in the car, according to the live stream.

A law enforcement dog was deployed and the suspect jumped into the hood of the car, the live stream of the KTLA showed.

CHP officers arrested the driver and arrested him at around 7:45 p.m.
