Driver, 80, strikes and seriously injures bicyclist in Torrey Highlands

An SUV driver coming off a freeway hit and seriously injured a cyclist on Wednesday afternoon in the Torrey Highlands area of ​​San Diego, police said.

It happened around 5:25 p.m. near the bottom of the exit from Eastern Route 56 toward Camino Del Sur, on an SR-56 Bike Trail, said San Diego Police Officer John Buttle.

The driver, an 80-year-old man behind the wheel of a Volvo XC90 SUV, was turning right at the Camino Del Sur freeway when he hit the cyclist, Battle said. The rider was on a crosswalk dedicated to a protected cycling path.

The victim, a 57-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries including fractures to her pelvis and fifth lumbar vertebrae, Battle said. Injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
