Donations off to good start, but long way to go – Press Telegram

Press-Telegram’s Send-a-Kid-to-Camp fundraising campaign has begun in earnest: readers donated $ 28,940 in the first two weeks to help children enjoy the outdoors at mountain camps this summer.

“It warms our hearts to see the outpouring of love so early in the campaign to support sending deserving children to camp,” said Marcelle Epley, president and CEO of Long Beach Community Foundationwhich has partners with Prensa-Telegram to launch fundraising each year.

Epley thanked the “amazing readers of Press-Telegram, from those who have been with us from the beginning to those who donated for the first time this year. Your kindness will last a lifetime for these children.”

But despite the big start, Epley said, the campaign has a long way to go to match last year’s record donation of $ 106,678.

“In fact, we want to break last year’s record,” Epley said, “so we can send even more boys and girls to these mountain camps.”

Frank Newell, chairman of the board of the Community Foundation, said he expects friends and readers of Press-Telegram to continue their generosity because there are so many children waiting to go to camp.

“Camp providers tell us this year’s need is higher than ever,” Newell said. “The mental health of many young people has been adversely affected by the isolation and stress caused by the pandemic.

“Families are also struggling financially to offer the camp experience to their children,” he added. “The camp grants that readers’ donations help make possible are more important than ever.”

Don Rodriguez, general manager of the Long Beach Boys & Girls Clubs, agreed that the need for financial aid has never been greater.

“There are many families who have been fighting the pandemic,” Rodriguez said. “We need to help as many of them as we can to take some of the pressure off them and allow their children to have fun in a unique life experience.”

This is the 23rd annual camp campaign that the late Press-Telegram columnist Tom Hennessy and Jean Bixby Smith, president emeritus of the Community Foundation, founded in 1999.

We didn’t do it alone.

To make this happen, we partner annually with the 5 major Long Beach youth groups: Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach, YMCA of Greater Long Beach, Camp Fire Angeles, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

As Tom Hennessy put it, a week at a mountain camp may not seem like much to some, “but for many of these young people, who are going through difficult situations, this may be their first break in life.”

We invite you to make a contribution this year and make a child’s dream come true.

Note that costs continue to rise. It takes about $ 500, on average, to send a one-week-old child to a mountain camp.

Thank you in advance for making a difference in the lives of children and families in financial need.
