The relationship between the severity of ADHD symptoms and food quality in children. The median CASI-5 score for the group at baseline for hyperactivity is 2.2 (IQR: 1.9-2.7) and for hyperactivity / impulsivity is 1.9 (IQR: 1.3-2.3). The results of a retrospective study between dietary quality and ADHD symptoms are shown in Table 2. Problems of hyperactivity-impulsivity are not associated with the HEI-2015 Total Score (Table 2). In further analysis using the food, vegetable (β = 00.118, p = .004) and total fruit (β = 00.158, p = .037) found they were associated with carelessness, while the grain part was refined. grades were strongly correlated with neglect (β = 0.056, p = .012), even after adjustment for possible gender differences, income, and parental education. Here is a good reason for children with dementia (ADHD) to eat fruits and vegetables: It can help reduce attention deficit disorders, new research shows.

As part of a larger study, researchers asked parents of 134 children with ADHD symptoms to complete detailed dietary guidelines. children eat, plus portion size, over 90 days.

One question asked parents to calculate the symptoms of ADHD in their children, such as difficulty concentrating, lack of instruction, difficulty remembering things, and difficulty adjusting our emotions.

The results showed that children who ate too many fruits and vegetables showed signs of neglect, said Irene Hatsu, study author and professor of nutrition at Ohio State University.

“Eating a healthy diet, along with fruits and vegetables, can be one way to reduce some of the symptoms of ADHD,” Hatsu said.

The study was published online recently in the journal Nutrition Education.

Data for this study were collected as part of a Micronutrients Study for ADHD in Adolescents (MADDY), which examined the effects of 36 essential vitamins and minerals to treat ADHD symptoms and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in 134-year-olds. 6 to 12.

Studies examining the effects of supplementation have shown that children who took micronutrients were three times more likely to show significant improvement in ADHD and symptoms of heart dysregulation than those who took placebo. This study was published last year in Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

A study involving the same children, published earlier this year in the journal Nutrientsshows that children and their families have the highest levels of maturity insecurity were more likely than others to show severe symptoms of mental dysregulation, such as chronic discomfort, mood swings and irritability.

All three studies drew the same picture, Hatsu said: A healthy food which provides all the nutrients that children need can help reduce the symptoms of ADHD in children.

“What doctors do when children with ADHD start to get more acute symptoms increases the number of their medications, if they are on one, or puts them on medications, ”Hatsu said.

“Our research shows that it is good to look at the ways in which children are exposed food as well as the quality of their food to see if it can contribute to the severity of their symptoms. “

Children in the MADDY study, all of whom met the criteria for ADHD, were taken from three sites: Columbus, Ohio; Portland, Oregon; and Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. The study was conducted between 2018 and 2020. Participants either did not take medication or stopped using it two weeks before the study began.

Studies on the consumption of fruits and vegetables and their role in malnutrition are based on data collected at the time children were first included in the study, before they started taking micronutrient supplements or placebo.

Why can diet be important in ADHD?

Researchers believe that ADHD is related to lower levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain — and that vitamins and minerals play an important role as partners in helping the body make these important neurochemicals and brain function further. one, said Hatsu.

Food insecurity can play an additional role.

“Everyone gets angry when they are hungry and children with ADHD are less attractive. If they do not have enough food, it can make their symptoms worse,” she said.

Also, the anxiety of parents who are worried about not being able to provide enough food for their children can lead to family violence which can lead to more symptoms for children with ADHD.

The MADDY study is one of the first to look at the relationship between ADHD symptoms and food quality among children in the United States and Canada, Hatsu said.

This is important because Western food, more than many other people, such as the Mediterranean, is poor at eating fruits and vegetables, she said.

“We believe that physicians should assess the nutritional status of children with ADHD before creating or changing treatment plans,” Hatsu said.

“Some symptoms can be easily controlled by helping families become healthier and more able to provide healthier food.”
