Depression linked to more severe dry eye disease

Depression is associated with dementia (DED) and general symptoms, according to a study published online March 10 in JAMA Ophthalmology.

Yi Zhou, from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and colleagues examined the association between depression and the severity of symptoms and DED symptoms, including swelling symptoms in a second cross-sectional study and data resistance from Dry Eye Assessment and Management study, incl patients with medium-to-acute symptoms and signs of DED. A total of 535 patients from 27 ophthalmology and vision centers were treated over a one-year period.

The researchers found that patients who underwent quality testing for depression had the worst DED symptoms in terms of Ocular Disease Index (OSDI) and Eye Disease Index and combined DED score. Depression, as evidenced by the small Scale Scale Score on the 36-item Short Form Health Survey, is associated with the highest OSDI scores at baseline, six months, and 12 months. “Discovery sad and considering treatment, including systemic medications, may be useful in treating patients with DED, ”the authors wrote.
