Demolition Underway of VTA Rail Yard in San Jose Where Mass Shooting Occurred

Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority teams today began demolishing a building in the yard of the light rail in San Jose, where last year a disgruntled VTA worker shot dead several of his co-workers before committing suicide.

Building B in the yard of the Guadeloupe light rail, which began demolishing this afternoon with work expected to continue on Thursday, May 12, is where six of the 10 VTA workers died in the May 26, 2021 mass shooting.

The building, where VTA’s power and signal crews worked before the shooting, has been empty ever since. The workers, who maintain the rail infrastructure, worked from other locations, according to the transit agency.

Agency officials said in a press release that the demolition of Building B “will allow VTA to move forward in designing long-term yard solutions with a building that meets VTA’s maintenance and operational needs, while supporting the emotional needs of workers who experienced the tragedy at the light rail facility.”
