Data breach threatens California concealed carry applicants

A data breach has exposed the personal information of California residents who have been granted or denied a concealed weapons transportation permit (CCW) by the state Department of Justice.

Anyone who applied for a CCW permit between 2011 and 2021 is considered at risk for their information to be leaked. The information on display includes names, dates of birth, gender, race, driver’s license numbers, addresses, and possible criminal records.

Social Security numbers or no financial information were disclosed, according to DOJ officials. That information is usually not linked to gun permits.

“This unauthorized disclosure of personal information is unacceptable and is far from my expectations for this department,” Attorney General Rob Bonta said. “The California Department of Justice has a responsibility to protect Californians and their data. We recognize the stress this can cause to those people whose information has been exposed. I am deeply disturbed and angry.”
