Daniel Suárez grabs historic NASCAR Cup Series win at Sonoma

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) – Daniel Suárez cried for many reasons Sunday after experiencing a dream of life on his first wake to the finish line at Sonoma Raceway.

While Suárez was thrilled to be the first Mexican -born driver to win the NASCAR Cup Series race, he was quick to fill the admiration and memories of his cycling journey. He thought about the multitude of fans supporting him abroad, with many Red Cross supporters shouting their hearts at the Sonoma stadium as a Part of his advertising program Daniel’s Amigos.

“I’m very lucky,” Suárez said after holding Chris Buescher to the flag.

“I am fortunate to be a leader that the entire Spanish community can connect with,” he said. The people in red today are my people. Some of them, they have the same journey as me – coming from Mexico, not knowing the language, trying to find a time, find goals and try to fulfill that dream. These are my people, and I am lucky to be a substitute for them all.

Despite such serious concerns, the event was not celebrated for 30 years since Monterrey finally won the 195th inaugural event of a Cup Series event that began in 2017.

After his tears dried in the car, he quickly called out the pinata that looked like a taco he held in his hand for his first victory – and he celebrated by pounding on the second with his hand.

“No one knew how much sweat, sacrifice and tears it made me,” Suárez said. “All this time, I’ve always dreamed of winning the Cup Series.”

Suárez drove his Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet to his third Cup Series win of the season for the next 2 -year team that was joined by former driver Justin Marks and music star Pitbull.

Suárez was ahead of Buescher and led the start of the final stage on this hill in the Northern California wine country, and he continued on a second stint and was alert to move forward. with 23 pieces to go. Buescher pushed hard, but Suárez made no mistake on the run to the win.

Buescher’s second finish was the best time in his RFK Racing Ford. He failed after his second career victory.

“It hurts to be close, but thanks to Suárez,” Buescher said. “We tried, trying to get him. The steam was all there.

Suárez is the fifth foreign -born driver to win a Cup Series race, and the first person to win in all three of NASCAR’s national records. He won the Xfinity Series race in 2016, and he won the Truck Series race that year.

“I haven’t seen a tougher, more thoughtful, and hard -working player in 20 years in this sport,” Marks said. “It’s amazing how consistent that fire continues.”

Suárez’s career and Trackhouse Racing can be a great motivator for a sport looking to expand its cultural footprint. After moving to the U.S. 11 years ago with a desire to race at major levels, Suárez is a major player for NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity program, which hopes to bring in new features. and characteristics of a large monocultural society for most of its history.
