Los Angeles — The Covina man who performed “Cruel and Sadistic” Online harassment campaign Two teenage girls who refused to make his sexual progress were sentenced to 18 months in federal prison from Wednesday, advising him to work in a mental health facility.
Karl Bennington, 34, pleaded guilty to two federal cyberstalker charges in December.
At a hearing of the ruling via Zoom, Judge Dolly Gee of the US District Court said Bennington was suffering from a “serious mental illness” and needed treatment.
But his mental health problems “do not tolerate the harm he has done to the victims,” she added.
Gee also sentenced him to release under surveillance for three years after Bennington was released from detention.
From at least February 2016 to March 2020, Bennington used a variety of social media accounts to harass victims, physically and to victims if they did not follow his progress. We have sent hundreds of messages threatening to commit sexual violence.
Neither teen has met Bennington in person, according to a federal prosecutor in Los Angeles.
According to court documents, when one of the girls demanded that Bennington stop harassing, Bennington replied that she and her family would be killed.
“Very cruel and sadistic” online communications with Bennington’s victims included sending pictures of men assaulting women and putting knives on their throats, Gee said.
The victim refused to speak at the hearing.
Bennington, who has been detained in the federal government since he was arrested last year, apologized to the victims and their families for “experiencing worsening mental problems over time.”
Attorney Lisa Lavalle told the court that her client experienced a gradual onset of schizophrenia before she was diagnosed with a mental illness.
According to federal prosecutors, Bennington was an online promoter of the “involuntary bachelorette” subculture, based on the desire to have a romantic or sexual partner but not find it.
In addition to the threatening and harassing messages he sent to young women and girls, the US Federal Prosecutor’s Office said Bennington made frequent statements about Internet groups promoting Insel’s ideology.
This ideology encourages the view that women oppress men and have too much freedom to choose their sexual partners. According to court documents, the beliefs range from sad and self-loathing to defending women’s “absolute hatred.”
