Corona student set to begin competing in National Spelling Bee – Press Enterprise

Corona — A 12-year-old kid from Corona is one of 209 competitors in the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee, which began on a virtual basis today.

Lara Randhawa won the Riverside County Spelling Bee in Zoom in March and qualified as a national bee. In the 19th round, she spelled the washroom (a noun for the washing process) correctly to beat the other 20 spellers.

Lara’s sister Aisha won the Riverside County Spelling Bee four times and was tied for 15th place in the 2019 National Bee.

“I really enjoy learning how to use the roots, definitions, and part of speech of different words to understand the spelling of words I’ve never heard of,” Lara said of the county bee. I said right after I got it.

“My dad helped me practice a lot. I used spelling tools online, and my sister also quized me. Family, district, county are proud of national bees I’m excited to come to think of it. “

Lara completed her seventh grade at Auburndale Middle School in Corona this month. She is a mythologist and loves to learn and read through stories. She especially enjoys Greek history, including Greek mythology such as the Prophets Cassandra, Persephone, Perseus and Medusa.

Lara’s favorite subject is history. She was part of a group presentation on the 2020 Corona-Norco Unified School District History Day on the 1929 Child Marriage Restriction Act. The law sets the marriage age in India at 14 for girls and 18 for boys.

Lara’s favorite historical figure is Barbara McClintock, an American scientist and cytogeneticist who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Lara enjoys playing the violin and golf.

Lara’s favorite TV show is Paramount +’s science fiction series Star Trek: Picard, and her favorite actor is her star, Sir Patrick Stewart.

Riverside County Speller has not won the national bees.

Saturday’s qualifying round consists of three rounds of oral competition.

In the first round, Speller is asked to spell the word. If they spell it correctly, they will answer the multiple-choice word that means the question and compete quickly in the second round.

If they answer it correctly, they will be asked to spell another word.

Speller, who answers all three questions correctly, will advance to Tuesday’s quarterfinals.

Qualifiers will be aired by the streaming service ESPN3 from 7 am to 3:30 pm Pacific time.

All tournaments up to the semi-finals will be held on a virtual basis. The top 10-12 finalists will move to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Baylake, Florida for the finals on July 8.

As of August 31, 2020, bees are limited to students in the second year of junior high school and younger. Participants are 9 to 15 years old.

The field consists of schools in Guam, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, the Department of Defense in Europe, as well as spellers in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Four foreign countries, the Bahamas, Canada, Ghana and Japan, are also participating.

The winner will receive a commemorative medal of $ 50,000 and the official Scripps National Spelling Bee Championship Trophy, the Scripps Cup, from Scripps, the owner of the television station and cable and broadcast network.

Winners will also receive $ 2,500 and a complete reference library from dictionary publisher Merriam-Webster. A $ 400 reference book from the Encyclopaedia Britannica, including a replica set of the 1768 Encyclopedia and a three-year online membership.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the organizers will hold a virtual-based contest until the semi-finals, canceling multiple-choice tests involving 12 spell words and 14 vocabulary questions, as well as some changes to bees. I was prompted to add.

A unique online testing platform has been developed to provide educators and other program sponsors with an alternative, easily accessible mechanism for managing local-level bee testing and participate in compliance with local pandemic response requirements. Increased flexibility to do.

The organizers also provided guidance to schools and sponsors who conducted the video conferencing spelling bee.

Bees have signed with technology vendors to create equal arenas and competition spaces so that all spellers in the national finals have the same virtual experience.

Vendors also provided bees with tracking information to maintain the integrity of the competition.

In order to duplicate the bee buddies among the spellers and make the spellers and their families feel like they are in the bee week, the organizers have virtualized a program with space to connect and celebrate their achievements. I designed the suite.
