Connerjack Oswalt missing: California teen found alive outside Utah gas station, police say

SALT LAKE CITY – Authorities in Utah Summit heard about a young man wandering the area with a shopping cart for several weeks.

When they met him last Saturday, they discovered he had been reported missing almost three years ago in northern California, more than 700 miles away.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a gas station on the morning of April 9 in the greater Park City area after a “concerned community member” reported seeing the man sleeping there, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post. The area is about a 40-minute drive from Salt Lake City.

Deputies offered the man to sit in one of their vehicles to warm up and began investigating who he was, the sheriff’s office said. “Through previous interactions and Saturday interaction, it was clear to lawmakers that the man was communicating differently,” the sheriff’s office said, and also included an autism awareness hashtag in its Facebook post.

A webmaster began searching through pages on the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children website and more than a dozen pages found a missing poster for Connerjack Oswalt.

Oswalt, now 19, was reported missing in September 2019 from Clearlake, California, northwest of Sacramento and about 11.5 hours by car from Summit County.

Authorities believed he was the same person they found trembling at the gas station.

“Deputies began making phone calls and were able to contact Conerjac’s mother,” Summit County Sheriff Lt. Andrew Wright told CNN.

His mother initially told Oswalt he had a characteristic mark on his throat. Deputies found the mark on Oswalt, Wright said.

Although authorities had previous interactions with Oswalt before that day, they had not disclosed who he was and police “had no reason to ask for his information because he was not breaking the law,” Wright said.

Oswalt’s father and grandfather went to Utah Park City to identify him personally and be reunited, Wright told CNN.

In one of two body camera videos sent to CNN by the sheriff’s office, Oswalt’s father appears to be shouting in disbelief as police show him a mug with Oswalt to confirm he was the same person. Wright told CNN that Oswalt had a previous arrest warrant.

“It is him; Oswalt’s mother is heard on the phone, which was on the speaker.

“A little older, but yes,” replies Oswalt’s father.

“My heart is alive,” the mother can be heard crying on the phone. “Can you go get him please?”

Oswalt’s mother and father have moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, since he disappeared, authorities said.

Oswalt was still receiving care and resources and has not yet been to Idaho, Wright said.
