Community college enrollment down since pandemic, SCCCD asking the community for input

FRESNO, California (KFSN) – The State Center Community College district wants to hear from you.

Brochures are sent across the area asking you to weigh some important issues.

Fresno City College student Hailey Curtis is enjoying a return to campus this year.

“I was excited to be back on campus,” Curtis said. “Being at home, social distance and distance education were really difficult for me. I had to learn to become more knowledgeable about technology than ever before.”

Now that students are back in the classroom, the school wants them to feel as safe and supportive as possible.

“Try to return to this sense of normalcy,” Curtis explained. “We are just trying to welcome students back so they know they had two difficult years but got back to business.”

But not everyone has returned to campus.

“One of the things we’ve seen is that some of our students did not come back and we wanted to know why,” said SCCCD Chancellor Carole Goldsmith.

Full-time enrollment is still down 11% for the region.

“You may be a little scared to go back, get in groups or have questions about the procedures,” Goldsmith said. “We want to determine why people do not go back to college.”

To determine what is delaying the return of students, the district sends leaflets and asks the community for input.

“It’s an opportunity to tell us your story because we hear it,” Goldsmith said.

Everything is in the hope that more students will return to the classroom.
