Colorectal cancer on track to become leading cancer killer

The Journal of American Medicine believes that colon cancer will be the biggest killer among 18- to 45-year-olds.

Of all cancers, colorectal cancer will take the most lives in people under the age of 50 by 2030, the magazine predicts.

Joanna Haydon says a doctor told her, “People like you don’t get cancer.”

He went from doctor to doctor for 18 months looking for answers. He did not believe that cancer was to blame for his illness.

“I’m thinking, ‘Okay, you’re right,’ for example, I have the right lifestyle choices and now. Said Haydon.

At 31, that all changed.

“I remember when I was diagnosed in May 2019, this was just a shame. I was so embarrassed that I didn’t know I had cancer,” Haydon said.

“One of the main issues is that when you are 25 or 35 and 45 years old, colon cancer does not have to be on the radar. I don’t think people sometimes understand how common the disease is for everyone, ”said Andrea Dwyer, a patient education and research consultant. Fight CRC.

Dwyer is also the director and founding member of the Colorado Cancer Screening Program at the University of Colorado Cancer Center.

In 2018, the American Cancer Society began recommending that people under the age of 45 begin regular colon cancer testing. It was recommended to start regular performances at the age of 50.

In 2021, the U.S. Preventive Services Group also changed its guidelines.

“I think there’s a lot of debate about whether we should move the screening policy for the average population over the age of 45 even below the age of 45. You know, if it’s found early and early, the chances of survival are over 90%. continuing and achieving that will be key to survival, ”Dwyer said.

More than 1.5 million people are living with colon cancer in the United States.

Hayden believes that if he had been examined a year earlier, at the age of 30, he would not have had third-stage cancer.

“I hope to lower the age for colonoscopies to 30 and it’s not the first cancer killer,” Hayden said.
