Colin Kaepernick Comeback? Has Just Had a Workout Today With the Raiders

The controversial quarterback is now 34 and hasn’t played NFL football in five seasons, but he did have a tryout with the Las Vegas Raiders on Wednesday.

San Francisco 49ers fans remember well the season when quarterback Colin Kaperenick went from adorable Bicep kissing hero too national Lightning rod for criticism over his Kneel during the national anthem protests. (As we learned in 2019, he was inspired about the SFPD shooting of Mario Woods.) That was 2016, and Kaepernick technically terminated his contract at the end of the season, despite the 49ers telling him to they would cut him if he didn’t. No team has signed him since, and it didn’t help that Trump was presidentalthough Kaepernick won a settlement for an undisclosed dollar amount in his case Complaint against the NFL for collusion to blacken him.

Kaepernick may no longer find himself on the blackball list. ESPN reports this Kaepernick trained with the Las Vegas Raidersformerly of the Oakland Raiders, though he’s 34 and hasn’t played NFL football in five seasons.

“Colin Kaepernick, who last played professional football in 2016 — the year he began kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial injustice — is scheduled to practice for the Las Vegas Raiders on Wednesday,” ESPN reported. “It will be Kaepernick’s first practice with an NFL team since his exile, and it will be the first time the former star quarterback has visited a team since he flew to Seattle in May 2017 to bond with the Seahawks meet before they miss the opportunity to sign it.”

NFL Network’s Ian Rappaport confirmed this today Wednesday, not next Wednesday.

Current Raiders owner Mark Davis has already backed the idea of bringing Kap back. “I believe in Colin Kaepernick,” Davis said NBC Bay Area a month ago. “He deserves every chance in the world to be a quarterback in the National Football League. I still stand by it. If our coaches and general managers want him or want him to be the quarterback on this team, I would welcome him with open arms.”

It would be great if the guy got another chance, so let’s look at it from a football point of view. Raiders starting quarterback Derek Carr just signed a $126 million deal, so Kaepernick would be a backup for sure. The Raiders’ other current backups are Jarrett Stidham (acquired through trade with New England), Chase Garbers (fresh from Cal!) and… Nick Mullens.

If your options are Nick Mullens or Colin Kaepernick, folks, it’s probably time for bicep kisses.
