Climate change action stalls during Biden’s first year

With the effects of the climate crisis, melting ice caps, rising sea levels and further accelerating fires, President Joe Biden’s plans to deal with it are stalled.

As a candidate, Biden said the fight against climate change would create jobs and start a clean energy industry, such as wind and solar.

“There is no crisis more serious than the threat posed by climate change to this nation or the world,” he said in a campaign video. “We can deal with this problem; we just have to act.”

But as president, his proposals aimed at breaking the habit of fossil fuels in America were halted. More than $ 500 billion was spent on the “build better” bill by Senate Republicans and opposed by Democrat Joe Manchin.

“I think I would like to say that we will deal with the climate crisis as it is; it is an emergency,” said Susan Joy Hassol, director of climate communications.

Climate advocates like Hassol want President Biden to reconsider his proposals, including imposing a carbon tax.

“We need to do three things: we need to phase out fossil fuels, expand clean energy, and protect forests,” Hassol said.

President Biden’s State of the Union address has just released a new United Nations report on Congress and the day has come, which paints a serious picture of a world approaching a point of no return.

“In fact, this report shows how people and the planet are being affected by climate change,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. “Almost half of humanity now lives in danger.”

Opponents of climate legislation often cite the price, but scientists and advocates have warned that the alternative could be much worse.

“People always talk about cost, but they don’t talk about what it will cost if we don’t do these actions,” Hassol said.

Climate advocates know that there are other national priorities, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Eastern Europe, but they say they will be overcome. Climate change will not go anywhere without action.
