City schools partner with UCSD on COVID-19 testing plan for students, staff

San Diego (CNS) – The San Diego Unified School District will provide students and staff with regular COVID-19 tests under a draft agreement announced with UC San Diego Health on Tuesday.

According to the county’s largest school district statement, the test plan provides all employees and students with access to the PCR test every two weeks. The frequency of testing will be adjusted over time based on virus and infection rates, according to SDUSD officials.

The San Diego Unified Board of Education will vote Tuesday night to approve a $ 5 million initial investment in a test program. Authorities said they would start with testing on a particular campus. According to SDUSD, the program will eventually be extended to the entire district, with the potential to include all 100,000 students and more than 10,000 district staff.

SDUSD has stated that it wants to evaluate its voluntary compliance rate first after the start of testing, so it has not yet decided whether testing is mandatory.

“This test program is an important part of our plan to continue teaching students in the midst of a pandemic,” said Sindy Marten. “Science is clear. You can prevent the spread of illness in schools simply by implementing a powerful test program like the one announced today.”

According to SDUSD, the school district is currently in Phase 1 of its reopening plan, with appointment-based face-to-face learning on October 13 for elementary school students who are “uniquely identified as experiencing learning loss by teachers.” It has been resumed. He said the resumption plan was established jointly with UCSD.

The University of California, San Diego Health states that the Center for Advanced Laboratory Medicine can process thousands of COVID-19 tests per day, with results typically returned within 24 hours.

Patty Maysent, CEO of UC San Diego Health, said: “Our doctors and scientists have been tackling this challenge since the first day of the pandemic. They have built rigorous models, systems, and programs based on science, evidence, and best practices. I am pleased to be able to participate in the effort to bring children back into the classroom safely. “
