After an absence of nearly two years, Elk Grove City Council will return to its face-to-face public meetings on March 9 due to the relaxation of COVID-19 precautions.
The meeting, which will be held at Elk Grove City Hall, 8400 Laguna Palms Way, will begin at 6 p.m.
In addition to its Feb. 23 decision to return to the boardroom for its public meetings, the board decided to temporarily continue its online meetings by teleconference. His desire is to discontinue that option in the future, depending on the state of COVID-19, the government regulations at the time.
Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen has expressed support for his return to the council chamber for public meetings.
“I’m not shy about it; I was anxious to wait for the face-to-face meetings to resume, “he said.
When the COVID-19 pandemic erupted in March 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order that led to the suspension of face-to-face public meetings. Governing councils could hold meetings by teleconference without providing a physical public meeting place.
As a result of this emergency order, the city council has been holding its public meetings exclusively in teleconference format since March 18, 2020.
The council planned to return to public meetings in person in its council chamber last summer, but precautions over a recent increase in COVID-19 cases in Sacramento County have led the council to resume its online meetings.
Prior to the council’s recent decision to return to face-to-face public meetings, the Sacramento County Public Health Officer on Feb. 16 revoked the previous public health order that required public meetings to be held in a virtual format.
Elk Grove City Secretary Jason Lindgren explained that the purpose of maintaining the hybrid, face-to-face and teleconferencing model is to “put this process on hold as we return from teleconferencing to being in person.”
“I think there will still be some reluctance on the part of our members of the public to return to these public spaces,” he said. “But part of that is to encourage people to come back, but also to see how the process goes.”
