Chris Taylor’s 2-run shot helps Dodgers defeat Diamondbacks

Chris Taylor hit a two-run homer and right fielder Tony Gonsolin threw six strong innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers bounced back to a 5-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday to open a four-game series.

Freddie Freeman had a double boost as the Dodgers won consecutive games after a streak of four straight losses during the season.

Christian Walker and David Peralta hit home runs for the Diamondbacks, while Ketel Mars had two hits. Arizona lost its third straight game and lost four of five after a promising run when it won seven of eight.

The Diamondbacks took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of Walker’s seventh homer of the season. Josh Rojas made it 2-0 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to right field that marked Mars.

The Dodgers began their comeback with a little help from the Diamondbacks defense. With two on board in the fifth inning, Mookie Betts hit a single just through the middle that overtook Arizona rookie center fielder Alek Thomas. Both runners scored with Betts getting credit for a single and a drive, while they finished in third base on the play.

Freeman followed Betts’ blow with a double push into the left field.

Max Muncy greeted reliever Sean Poppen with a simple touch to open the Dodgers ’half of the sixth inning, and Taylor followed up with a homer on the right field, his third of the season.

Gonsolin (4-0) conceded two runs in three hits during his six innings with two bases per ball and seven strikeouts. Los Angeles right-hander Craig Kimbrel threw the ninth inning for his sixth save, but not before conceding a two-run homer to Peralta, his fifth.

Diamondbacks starter Madison Bumgarner (2-2) gave up three runs in six hits in five innings with two bases per ball and a strikeout. Bumgarner has fallen 0-5 in his last six outings at Dodger Stadium, going back to 2018.

The Dodgers’ victory came after they lost the last two games of a three-game series in Arizona in late April.
